Paddled Palmetto Dunes lagoon system today....

We have been getting cold, strong, gusty West to North West winds the last few days making for a flat ocean, choppy creeks ,rough white caps in the sound. I decided to paddle the sheltered lagoon system of Palmetto Dunes Resort. An 11 mile salt water lagoon system that is lined with semi-tropical vegetation, over hanging trees and narrow passages. The lagoon system provides for eight miles of scenic boat tours, and serves as the backdrop for the resort’s three championship golf courses and multi million dollar properties of Hotels, Timeshares and Homes along the ocean front community. The lagoon system was developed by dredging the sand from inside the property and placing it on the beachfront creating the dunes. . Thus creating a lagoon system. It provided a template for the neighborhood of Palmetto Dunes as well as a wide range of amenities. Tidal gates were installed 30 years ago in two spots to control the tides and flush the lagoons to keep the water clean and pristine. Its a great fishing and kayaking ecosystem and now after three years of stand up paddling, I finally decided to get out there and experience another piece of SUP paddle heaven.
This time I will bring others to enjoy.. Want to go? contact me..

The yellow trail was my paddle route today. 5-6 miles maybe..

Trent Jones Golf course in backgroung. Received a lot of looks today and I watched a golfer hit two balls in the water then threw his club across the tee box..
No homes near this passage and it seemed like a world away..

Inserted leash plugs on the deck of Scott's PSH

Had fun today with my little project by adding leash plugs on the deck of Scott's 9-6 WAA PSH Stand Up board so he can use the paddle as a handle for easy board transportation. It will save on the lifting the board over one's shoulders and flattening the top of your head walking to and from the beach.

Glassy Perfection '' @ 1-2 feet ''

A very chilly, crisp, still morning watching clean 1-2 ft waves. Jesse and I paddled oout and had a ride and glide session. Took one of my old water camera's out and took a few pics. super small but fun as always. This is why we Stand Up Paddle . Makes the small waves do'able.
PS. (The water temp dropped again to the mid upper 40"s *F . )

Morning frigid waves

Pretty little waves this morning. I awoke to a nice clean thigh - waist high surf. The early morning dark looking sky and frigid temps may seem to be a deterrent to some but its heaven to me.. With all the hype of last nights snow forecast for Hilton Head (some light flurries ) I'm sure many were let down.. When ocean and water temps are in the mid 50's *F and our Island surrounded by that water , it will need much colder air temps than 32 *f to make
snow and have it stick..
Simple science !

Swell heading for the Caribbean

As the Nor'Easter heads away from North America, leaving in its wake is lots of Snow in the North East and will send a swell to the Atlantic's Caribbean Islands.. Puerto Rico will receive a swell in a couple of days as well as the many outer West and North facing Islands. To all that are there or heading there, have fun.. Puerto Rico's Tres Palmas will be big , The buoy's reading 10-12 ft @ 14 sec.
Will be a good 2-3 day swell
Call in sick for a few days and pack the boards .
This is what we look for in a swell making machine.

Small choppy knee/thigh rollers today

The last four days during the heavy offshore winds and storm that hammered the mid-Atlantic states making our conditions crappy have made me a little itchy to get in the water. The creeks and marshes had 1-2 foot chop making it hard to flat water paddle. Last night the winds subsided and today a NE swell heading towards Florida started refracting some little thigh high sets on our beaches. Warm temps and SE winds made for a well deserved ' Christening'..
One hour was all I needed..

KIALOA new Paddle Pipes 2010

KIALOA has a new Paddle design called 'Pipes' for 2010. Made for woman due to its smaller blade being under 8 inches at 7 & 1/4 inches wide... Same construction as the Methane and Shaka Pu'u. Men use it for Stand Up Paddle Surfing due to its small blade design and being agile while riding waves. Here is Kialoa's owner Dave Chun talking about the new paddle...
