standuppaddlesurf.net    Mark Colino on cold weather paddling

By Mark Colino
If you live where temperatures go below freezing in the winter, you have 3 choices when it comes to flat water paddling; #1 Don’t ( Not acceptable if you’re truly hooked). #2 Buy a plane ticket to somewhere warm. #3 Dress appropriately and go!

Since #1 & #2 aren’t in my current budget, I’ll share some tips for #3.
  • Before getting dressed, put some high energy music on to get you psyched & elevate your heart rate.
  • Get dressed indoors! Don’t wait until you are at your launch spot to get dressed. If you start warm it’s easier to stay warm. If you start cold it’s harder to get warmer.
  • Wear a wicking layer under your paddling pants or sleeveless longjohn (Starboard makes a nice one) & a tight fitting wicking layer under a looser paddling jacket. You will sweat no matter how cold it is. A full wetsuit is too restrictive for flat water training or touring where you’re most likely are not going to fall in.
  • Wear 7mm booties & 6mm mitts. Your feet are farthest from your heart & not moving much, so get thick booties! Bring a water bottle with hot water in it and pour it down your boots right before you start. Gloves allow for better grip & switch on the paddle, but mitts are warmer since your fingers are all together. Come spring, when you take them off you will find you actually improved your efficiency!
  • Wear a moisture wicking beanie (Da Kine makes one). If you go heavy wool style, you’re sweat will start to freeze on the hat. (not good)
  • Don’t forget your hydration pack. Even in the cold your muscles need to be hydrated.
  • Don’t paddle alone & wear a leash! In freezing temperatures, things can wrong real fast!
  • If you need motivation, imagine yourself beating an arch rival who is sitting at home getting slow & heavy. Or how fortunate you are to have the physical ability and means to be able to sup.
Remember, excuses don’t excuse us! They accuse us. I’ll see you out there.

Starboard's 8-2 Wide Point..

Looking forward to riding this new shape in the surf. this board is 6.8 KG is equal to 15 plus lbs. Should be light in the Carbon Fiber construction.. Will be looking at them at the Surf Expo and hopefully ordering one thru my team rider  program..  Floated one, the Candy construction,  a few weeks ago and seemed stable and supported my frame.( 190 # ) in flat calm water. Looks like the next surf SUP model .....  Starboard's 2013 lineup looks great .. get on their website and check it out..

"The time has arrived to understand that width means stability, speed and power."The 8'2" x 32" is a new breed of board with its own signature move that found its place during testing on wave after wave. Holding the bottom turn a little shallower, then drawing a line to go into a heavy flowing cutback, this board just gauged and kept speed running with Starboard’s unique Wing Quad fin set-up. The dimensions are the miracle that offers certainty under foot and reliability when turning to take-off. Here is a board that will be enjoyed by all and certainly borrowed by your friends. Getting it back from them will be the only difficult thing you’ll find with this board.

"Continuous single concave the entire length of the board."

2013 Starboard 8'5" x 29" Pro SUP

How about this under your tree for Christmas....

"Scott McKercher Pro model" "The new rocker outline and railscombine to make a radical yet smooth board for pure performance."The 8'5" has evolved with characteristics shared with its smaller brother, the 8'0". A heavy tail-rockered mono-concave has been adopted to perfectly complement the square tail. Finer rails, flatter deck and less volume throughout also enhance sensitivity and the ability to hold a rail at high speed in larger surf.

Once again, claims of faster, tighter, and harder turns are borne out.

Fun Little paddle in the mangroves of Florida

Went for a paddle today before the storms forecasted this afternoon.  I took some pics. I placed the on a rock at waters edge camera set in 1 sec time lapsed shot mode. It started shooting then the camera fell in the water still shooting as I paddled toward the spot. Here are the few pics from the incident. Headed over to the  Mangroves and noticed a Dolphin with its dorsal missing and split. Was chasing  all the mullet , stun feeding.. I followed the dolphin for 30 mins all around the Mangroves
Great  day on the water..

Paddled today ..Hernando Beach, Fl.

Paddled a few hours today on the Gulf off of Hernando Beach.. I approached a secluded basin full of Pompano in some shallow stagnate water. There had to be several hundred schooled up. Pretty cool watching them swim under the board.. Warm, 79* F calm day, perfect for a paddle.....

The new 2013 Starboard website

Here is the new 2013 Starboard SUP on line catalog..
Great information on all their boards and paddles, photos, videos, team , starboard news and tips.. There is a SUP for you..  Check it out...

Few fun waves this Morning.

We had some calm winds and warble type thigh/ waist high waves breaking on the shallow plateau type sand bar that has  developed just several yards off the beach. Kind if shutting down and making the waves explode in the shallow water, just had to pick your wave.. . Always Fun..
